Following the government’s announcement that the first AI Growth Zone will be based in Culham in Oxfordshire, Oxford Innovation Space has organised the first in a series of special AI roundtable events to bring together likeminded SMEs working in complementary fields of AI.
The inaugural event recently took place at the Culham Innovation Centre, part of our network of innovation centres and based within the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA) Culham Campus. Businesses gathered together to network, exchange knowledge, discuss practical challenges and key issues such as cyber security, data sovereignty, copyright and ethics.
Those attending the roundtable, and now founding members of the newly formed group, included Rufilla, DigiLab, Data Luminescence and Amentum. Meeting every six weeks, the group aims to create an inclusive community engaged with the new AI Growth Zone at Culham, to develop a dynamic cluster of AI-focused companies, stakeholders and investors, and to create a local directory of AI-focused companies.
AI is advancing rapidly and the opportunities are significant. According to a government-commissioned study on the AI sector, which was published in 2024, there were more than 3,000 AI companies in the UK, generating more than £10 billion in revenues, and employing more than 60,000 people in AI related roles.

Wendy Tindsley, Innovation Director at Oxford Innovation Space, explains:
“Having the first AI Growth Zone at the Culham Campus is an exciting development for the SME community here. Our centre is full of innovative businesses, which are developing cutting-edge products. We had a high calibre of businesses attend this first roundtable and there were lots of energetic discussions that have already led to collaborations.
“There is so much power in bringing likeminded people together because it generates multiple insights, mutual support and collaborations. Building communities of SMEs and facilitating introductions is one of the most important elements of our work here at Oxford Innovation Space.”
Joe Nicholson, Managing Director of Rufilla - a dynamic technology consultancy that empowers companies to create cutting-edge Smart products – has been based within the Culham Innovation Centre since 2018 and has grown his business to a team of eight in that time. He explains:
“I’m interested in local AI models and how AI can be incorporated into devices. I strongly believe that AI is a technology that shouldn’t be placed in the hands of just a few big players and the UK needs to further develop its own capabilities. Otherwise, we will be left behind other countries like the US and China.
“This first roundtable here in Culham has generated some interesting discussions, valuable connections and opportunities to collaborate. It is advantageous to have likeminded people on your doorstep as there is the potential to work together to develop bigger products and projects.”
Andy Corbett, Head of Research and Development at DigiLab – a start-up company which moved into the Culham Innovation Centre a year ago – adds:
“The AI Growth Zone announcement is an excellent indicator that the UK government is supportive of homegrown AI capabilities. This is an exciting time for us as a company. In many ways, AI raises more questions than it answers, so this group is an ideal opportunity to bring together experts in different fields to discuss practical challenges and explore issues like data sovereignty.”
Matt Reid, CEO of Data Luminescence, concludes:
“You’re not just renting a space in an innovation centre, you’re an active part of a community and the instigation of this AI focused group illustrates that perfectly. Everyone in the group has different experiences and credentials, but we are passionate about the opportunity AI brings, and the challenges still left to solve, such as reducing its energy use and improving oversight. We're all excited to see where working together could lead.”
